Who County Attorneys Represent & What They Do

County Attorneys are elected officials. They represent both their own county and the State of Montana within their county. County Attorneys are responsible for the prosecution of all felony crimes occurring in their county, and all misdemeanor crimes occurring outside the city limits of any city within their county. They are responsible for defending or prosecuting all civil claims for or against their county. County Attorneys are also required to represent agencies of the State of Montana when required by law or when directed to do so by the Attorney General.

County Attorneys may be full or part time, usually depending on the population of the county. Full time County Attorneys are prohibited from private practice, cannot represent private clients, and cannot give legal advice to private citizens. Part-time County Attorneys may have a part-time private practice, may represent private citizens on legal matters, and give private legal advice for compensation, so long as it does not conflict with their duties as County Attorney. Some of the more populated counties have Deputy County Attorneys. Their number varies from county to county, dependent upon the needs of each county. These positions may be either full or part-time.

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month

It is a time to connect with families, communities, prevention advocates, and supporters to focus on the creation of an ecosystem of primary prevention in the U.S. and emphasize the importance of building a narrative of hope for the future of children and families. Children who live in families with access to economic and concrete support are less likely to experience abuse and neglect. Community support and partnerships can help lighten the burden on families and strengthen communities from the ground up. In April, during Child Abuse Prevention Month, let’s recognize the dedicated and passionate prevention teams, programs, partners working year-round to create awareness about the public health issue of abuse and neglect. Every day, a connected network of prevention leaders, lived-experience experts and a host of partners in prevention link arms to build evidence that supports advocacy for family-strengthening policies that can help lift the load for overburdened families. Let’s applaud the progress we’ve made in prevention, but also encourage the development of partners in the remaining critical work that families of Hill County need. Each day is an opportunity to build the foundation for all children and families to live a purposeful and happy life with hope for the future.
